Dr. Jamie Loggins is a distinguished bariatric surgeon with a career spanning over two decades, marked by significant achievements in medical leadership, surgical innovation, and patient care.

Expertise and Leadership

Throughout his career, Dr. Loggins has been at the forefront of bariatric surgery and minimally invasive techniques.

In 2006, he joined Central Maine Medical Center, where he developed and led a dedicated minimally invasive and bariatric surgery program. Under his leadership, the program became a high-volume, MBSAQIP-accredited comprehensive bariatric surgery center, performing a full spectrum of procedures including laparoscopic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and adjustable gastric banding. Dr. Loggins' innovative spirit led him to introduce single incision laparoscopic surgery to the state of Maine, further cementing his reputation as a pioneer in his field.

In 2010, Dr. Loggins was appointed as the inaugural Chief of Surgery at Central Maine Medical Center, a position that showcased his leadership abilities in overseeing a diverse range of surgical services in a 350-bed regional hospital system. His tenure was marked by significant improvements in patient care, including the implementation of system-wide electronic medical records and the development of quality-focused compensation models for providers.

National Recognition

Dr. Loggins' expertise and leadership in bariatric surgery have been recognized nationally.

He has served as a site surveyor for the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) of the American College of Surgeons since 2016. This role has allowed him to contribute to maintaining high standards of care in bariatric surgery programs across the country.

In 2018, Dr. Loggins took on the role of Medical Director at Sentara Comprehensive Weight Loss Solutions in Norfolk, Virginia. There, he oversaw a high-volume, multi-surgeon practice and a medical weight loss program, continuing to push the boundaries of bariatric care by introducing advanced endoluminal therapies.

Most recently, in November 2021, Dr. Loggins was appointed as the Medical Director of a major weight management provider in the Southeast. In this role, he continues to lead an accredited Comprehensive and Adolescent Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery program, focusing on bringing cutting-edge treatments to patients struggling with obesity.

Dr. Loggins has served as the Chair for the Committee on Applications for the Maine Chapter of the American College of Surgeons for several years, as well as having served as the Chapter President of the same society.  He served for several years on The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Communication Committee; and currently serves on the ASMBS Access to Care Committee, in addition to being the Chair of the ASMBS Emerging Technologies and Procedures Committee.

Throughout his career, Dr. Loggins has been actively involved in medical education and research. He has authored several publications, presented at numerous conferences, and has been a frequent invited speaker on topics related to bariatric surgery and minimally invasive techniques. His commitment to education extends to his role as clinical faculty at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He currently serves on several committees at the American Society For Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), including the Program Committee, Access to Care committees, and as Chair of the Emerging Technologies and Procedures Committee.

Education

Medical School / Military Service / Residency

His journey in medicine began at Illinois Wesleyan University, where he earned a B.A. in Biology, setting the foundation for his future medical career. Dr. Loggins went on to obtain his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, graduating in 1996.

Following his medical education, Dr. Loggins embarked on a unique path that combined military service with surgical training. He completed his internship at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, before serving as an Officer in Charge at the Troop Medical Clinic at Fort Carson, Colorado. This experience in the United States Army not only honed his leadership skills but also instilled in him a sense of discipline and dedication that would characterize his future medical career.

Dr. Loggins' surgical expertise was further refined during his residency in General Surgery at Marshfield Clinic/St. Joseph's Hospital in Wisconsin, where he served as Chief Resident in his final year. His commitment to advancing surgical techniques led him to pursue a fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery at the University of California Davis Medical Center, completing it in 2006.

Personal Interests

Dr. Loggins' professional achievements are complemented by his personal interests and accomplishments. An avid athlete, he has completed multiple Ironman triathlons and is a certified spinning instructor. His diverse interests also include skiing, marathon coaching, and flying as a private pilot.
